Jason Clifford Harlan passed away peacefully in Albuquerque on Friday, August 5, 2022, due to complications of a stroke. Jason was born on July 18, 1950, to Clifford R. Harlan and Allison Scott Harlan as the eldest of three children. He grew up in northern New Jersey and graduated from Ridge High School in Basking Ridge. As a teen, he took up collecting old bottles excavated from small, abandoned dumpsites. He chose to move west to attend the University of North Dakota and graduated with a bachelor's degree in public administration. He made many lifelong friends in North Dakota and loved to visit for vacations and golf.
Jason's initial work after college was in floodplain insurance mapping in Washington DC. He enjoyed several years in Paraguay after his marriage to Nilda Caniza. Upon his divorce, he moved to Albuquerque and worked in banking for several years prior to joining the Internal Revenue Service in Washington and subsequently in Albuquerque. He retired from the IRS after many years imparting knowledge of the tax obligations between employers and independent contractors.
Jason was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing at Arroyo Del Oso and most courses in New Mexico. All sorts of games, including cribbage, fantasy football, cards, scrabble, chess, and crosswords, kept him busy regularly with friends and family. He was an avid reader and enjoyed following major league baseball and college basketball.
Jason was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his sisters Peggy Harlan (Jack) and Carol H. Earp (Douglas), niece Lia Simmons Yildirim (Sal), great-nephew Michael, and great-niece Sage. His family and many friends will miss him.
The family would like to thank the dedicated workers at Roadrunner Hospice and the caregivers at Fountain Hill (Sandia View Assisted Living) for providing skilled and compassionate care in Jason's final months. Cremation has taken place per his wishes and no services are planned. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the University of North Dakota, Dept. of Political Science & Public Administration, or your favorite charity in Jason's memory is preferred.
