Knight, Janet Lee

January 9, 1933 - September 6, 2017

Janet Lee Knight, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2017. She was born to Frank and Dorothy Knight on January 9, 1933 in Trenton, Michigan and grew up in Lincoln Park, Michigan. After graduating from Lincoln Park High School, Janet earned her Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo and then became employed at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital in Grand Rapids, MI. Two years later, she moved to Chicago, Illinois to attend Loyola University, where she received her degree as a Master of Social Work. She then returned to Michigan to work for Catholic Social Services in Muskegon. After a couple of years, Janet joined the Dominican Sisters of Grand Rapids, Michigan and moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico to serve as a social worker at Nazareth Psychiatric Hospital. Three years later, she left the convent and went into private practice with a psychiatrist and a psychologist in Albuquerque, where she practiced for ten years. She then made the decision to return to the midwest, first to Michigan, and then settled in Anderson, Indiana where she began her own private practice, providing counseling for individuals, couples, families and groups for over thirty years.

In April, 2016, Janet returned to Albuquerque to be close to her family.

Janet was passionate about her profession but also enjoyed a busy social life and had many friends. She enjoyed hosting dinner parties, was an avid bridge player and loved to travel both the United States and to many countries throughout the world. She and her sister Karen often traveled together and Janet had very fond memories of one special cruise they enjoyed, which was the final voyage of the Queen Elizabeth II. Always an outgoing free spirit, Janet somehow managed to talk her more shy sister into entering a costume contest during a cruise through the Panama Canal and was quite proud when they won the second place prize.

Janet had a deep love for animals, especially beagles, and had especially close bonds with two pets in particular; her cat Kitty Kay and her beagle Tiger. During her final years, she spoke of them often and loved flipping through photo albums full of memories of her furry friends.

Janet is survived by her loving and devoted sister Karen, nephew David and his children Sophia Rider (Corey), Dexter (Amber), and Alexis Engleman (Brandon) and great-nephew Levi, nephew Edward (Jamey) and their children Alex and Lily, and Karen’s daughter-in-law Yolanda Luchetti-Knight. She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved beagle Tiger, who always held a special place in her heart. Janet was loved by her family and friends and will be deeply missed. Cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held on September 21, 2017. The family is extremely grateful to the staff at Skies Rehabilitation Center, The Rio at Cabezon, the medical team at Presbyterian Rust Medical Center and On Point Hospice for the loving care they provided during Janet’s time in Albuquerque.
