James Patrick Powers, age 72, died February 15, 2016. Jim was born in Staten Island, New York. He attended Cardinal Hayes High School and Iona College in New York graduating in 1964. Jim served his country in the U.S. Army where he became a Vietnamese language specialist, training in Fort Bliss and in the Peace Corps where he traveled to Chile. Jim later moved to Albuquerque in 1971 where he pursued his Master's degrees in Journalism and Latin American studies at the University of New Mexico. Jim met the love of his life, Cathy in a pre-law class at UNM in 1978. Jim worked at KAFB PK Contracting Division for 30 years, retiring in 2006.
Jim loved to travel, was an avid reader and linguist, enjoyed literature, politics, and world and sports history. Jim was an athlete who loved sports, enjoyed bicycling and running, and his beloved Lobos and Yankees. Running was his special love - he ran numerous races with his cherished "Sand Turtles".
Jim was preceded in death by his mother, Mary O'Grady Powers, originally from County Sligo, Ireland; and father, Mike Powers. Jim is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Catherine Mayfield-Powers; loving daughter, Diana Gurule (Andrew); mother-in-law, Virginia Barbieri Mayfield; sisters, Kathy Young (Allan) and Maureen Powers; brother-in-law's Dan Mayfield (Teresa) and Michael Mayfield (Agnes); and many loving aunts, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Jim was a devoted husband, father, brother, and friend and will be missed dearly.

Services will be held at Our Lady Fatima Catholic Church on Friday, February 19, 2016 beginning with a viewing at 9:30 a.m., rosary at 10:15 a.m., and funeral mass at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
