Dr. James L. Lawrence died Sunday, February 28, 2016 at the age of 74 at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque NM.
James L. Lawrence was born on October 22, 1941 in New York City to Telete and Ernice Lawrence formerly of Ft. Worth, TX. His father Ernice was a renowned operatic tenor, and his mother Telete was an accomplished speech pathologist. He attended Texas Christian University, where he achieved an (MA) in Biology in 1965, and then attended graduate school at the University of Maine, receiving a doctorate in 1968.
Dr. Lawrence lived in upstate New York where he began his distinguished career as an educator. He served both as a teacher and Dean of Students at several small colleges in the midwest, Owning / Running a restaurant in Oneonta (NY) for a brief period, and eventually completing his academic career as the Dean of the College of Santa Fe in Santa Fe, NM, where he retired in 2001.
In retirement, Jim was quite active. Love of adventure and travel was a theme throughout his life. He especially loved India and the lasting friendships he made there. His journeys eventually lead him to move to San Miguel de Allende in 2001, where he spent three years enjoying the beautiful culture and cuisine. Although he moved back to the States, he continued his love affair with Mexico and his many dear friends, returning often for visits.
Jim will fondly be remembered by family and friends for his intelligence, quick wit, delightful sarcasm and his ability to extend love to everyone he knew. He was a distinguished professor, writer, foodie, avid fan of Opera, the cinema, and champion of social consciousness.
His parents and sister, Valerie, predeceased Dr. Lawrence. He is survived by his partner and close friend, Mr. Patrick Ross. He also leaves behind loving cousins, nieces and devoted lifelong friends, and of course his two beloved cats, Tinta and Koko.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 12, 2016, 2:00 p.m. at FRENCH - Wyoming. At the request of Dr. Lawrence's family and friends, donations in his memory may be made to St. Coletta of Wisconsin.
