MEEK, JAMES E. James E. Meek, devoted Husband, Dad and Papaw, entered into his heavenly home on the afternoon of March 30, 2014. James was born in Possum Holler, SC to William and Bethel (Chambers) Meek on September 1, 1927. In 1945, he joined the Army-Air Force and served in Europe during the latter part of World War II. After his honorable discharge in 1949, he attended a small church in Greenwood, SC where he met Ruby Boutwell, his Sunday School teacher. After the service, Ruby called him to welcome him to the church, he answered her call by saying "Valley Forge, George Washington speaking," to which she immediately hung up, and redialed. Shortly after the phone call, the two shared a chocolate milkshake, and married six months later. In 1952, James and Ruby relocated to Albuquerque where he attended UNM, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Biology. In 1955, they welcomed their son, James "Jim", and in 1957, their daughter Carole. James began working for Kirtland Air Force Base in 1969 as a Supervisory Technical Writer, and retired 20 years later. James was known for his quick wit and his love for living a "country" lifestyle. He was an avid reader and spent much of his retirement at his home in the North Valley where he cared for many animals over the years, including horses, dogs, cats, rabbits and a capuchin monkey. James is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ruby B. Meek; his son, James E. Meek, Jr.; daughter, Carole A. Meek-Bowers; two granddaughters, Amanda Chavez and Elizabeth Steplowski; great-granddaughter, Ashley; two brothers, Albert (Joyce) Meek of Spartanburg, SC and Charles Meek of Midway, GA. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Bethel Meek. Visitation will be held Thursday, April 10, 2014 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at French - University. Services will be held on Friday, April 11, 2014 at 12:00 p.m. at French - University. Interment with military honors will follow at 3:00 p.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
