Jim Kimmons was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico to James Luther and Alice Elizabeth Bowen Kimmons. He attended Highland and Valley High Schools, graduating in 1962. He went on to attend UNM where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1969 and a Master of Public Administration in 1989. He also attended UNM Law School. Jim taught mathematics at TVI (later CNM) until he retired in May of 2009. For more than a decade he served as a reserve officer with the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office. He was a member of the New Mexico Gun Collectors Association and was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. Jim also studied Shorin-Ryu Okinawan Karate for more than 25 years where he earned a 5th degree black belt. Jim was a regular competitor on the national tournament circuit, becoming a highly regarded fighter and forms performer. In 1989 the United Stated Karate Association nationally ranked him in weapons. He was also a willing mentor and teacher to younger karate-ka coming up through the ranks. Jim was a tireless volunteer working with the homeless through several ministries in Albuquerque. He was active in his church, Christ the King Anglican Church and before that St. Marks on the Mesa where he was a lay minister. He has been active in Bible class and visited many churches in Albuquerque over the years to worship. Jim is survived by his son, Steven S. Taylor of Falls Church, VA and daughter, Lisa and husband, Dave Pollack of Colleyville, Texas; brother, Alan (Gail Carter) Kimmons of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Patrick Lonz of Albuquerque, Adam and K.C. Taylor of Falls Church, VA and Kate, Sam and Maggie Pollack of Colleyville, TX. Many cousins and close friends whom he met through his many endeavors over the years also survive him. He was considered to be a good friend to many and a caring and humble man. Friends may visit Wednesday, June 12, 2013 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. at FRENCH - Lomas. Services will be held on Thursday, June 13, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at FRENCH - Lomas. Interment to follow the service at Sunset Memorial Park.
