James W. Hubbs, 81, beloved son, father, and grandfather was called to his eternal resting place on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, after a long battle with Dementia. He was born on Wednesday, August 27, 1941 in Durango, CO. He is preceded in death by his father, Frederick Hubbs; mother, Maxine Gillespie; step-father, Charles Gillespie; and son- in-law, Jose Valdez. He is survived by his brothers, Richard Hubbs (Dell), Bob Gillespie (Janie); daughters, Billie Jo Hubbs (Gerson Rizo) and Janelle Valdez (Raul); grandchildren, Courtney, Caitlyn, Jose, Janae, Diego, Santiago and Max. Nieces, Dijoni and Bobbi Gillespie; nephew Darrin (Wendy); and great nephews Jensen and Levi.
James served in the United States Air Force from 1961-1970, during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1970 as a staff Sergeant. He worked at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico for 33.5 years working as a Metrologist. He was a Principle Technologist in Metrology at Sandia's Primary Standards Laboratory and a Subject Matter Expert in Vacuum Technology. His coworkers called him the mountain goat. The light of Jims life was his kids and grandkids. He spent his free time in the outdoors mountain biking, hiking, and traveling to climb mountains. He had a goal to climb the Colorado Grand Slam (mountains over 14,000 feet) before the age of 60, which he accomplished. James will be remembered for his fun loving quick witted personality. If Jim was not with his family, he was enjoying the outdoors.
A Funeral Service is scheduled for Friday, August 18, 2023 at FRENCH- Westside at 3:00 p.m. Reception to follow at Janelle's residence. In leu of flowers, please send donations to the Alzheimer's Association in memory of James W. Hubbs.
