James Willard Hammons, Jr., born Saturday, January 29, 1949, in Albuquerque passed away on Saturday, December 4, 2021. James was a kind, gentle, and compassionate man. James graduated from Highland High School and the University of New Mexico. Upon graduating from UNM, James worked for various employers, including French Mortuary from 1979 until 2007. James enjoyed ballroom dancing, UNM football and basketball, and professional tennis. He was also a huge Civil War buff and loved composer Cole Porter and Broadway music. Most significantly, James loved his dogs, and throughout his lifetime he rescued many.
Mr. Hammons was preceded in death by his parents, Major James Hammons, Sr. and Josephine Ridenour Hammons. He is survived by his brother, Joseph Hammons and wife, Kimberly of Scottsdale, AZ; niece, Dr. Alexandria Abrams and her husband, Dr. Tyler Abrams of San Diego, CA; and his longtime friend, Dr. Sheri Benischek.
Contributions may be made to any animal humane organization. Viewing will be held on Saturday, December 18, 2021, 2:00 p.m., at FRENCH-University with a Memorial Service to follow at 3:00 p.m.
