James Albert Van Den Avyle, Ph.D, age 67, of Corrales, NM, peacefully passed away at his home on February 19, 2014 due to complications from ALS. He was born in South Bend, Indiana and lived his early years in Mishawaka, Indiana. Jim received his B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering from Purdue University in 1968. He went on to get his Masters and Doctorate degrees in Metallurgy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Jim and his wife Carol met in high school; married in June of 1968; and after college, moved to Corrales in the fall of 1974. For the next 39 years they restored and built their home together, one adobe at a time, and raised two sons while Jim had a distinguished career Sandia National Laboratories. He retired in 2006 after 38 years at the Lab. If you were ever looking for Jim, he could be found listening to classic vinyl, tinkering in his workshop or garage, working on the house or fishing in Minnesota. Jim was known for being a helpful, supportive, and loving husband, father, brother, friend, and neighbor. He had a kind heart and quick wit and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Jim is survived by his wife of 46 years, Carol; two sons, Brian J. Van Den Avyle and Justin J. Van Den Avyle and his wife Meghan, all of Albuquerque; and brother, Michael J. Van Den Avyle of Athens, GA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert "Al" and Helen Van Den Avyle. A Celebration of his Life will be held at a later date.
