Isadora "Izzy" Shattuck Sarracino, 96, member of Laguna Pueblo, passed away on October 24, 2014. She was born at Isleta Pueblo, NM on June 2, 1918, the third child born to Paul and Beatrice Abeita Shattuck. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George P. Sarracino; son, Paul Charles Sarracino; siblings, Agnes Dill, August Shattuck, Romalda Shattuck, and Joseph Shattuck. Isadora is survived by daughter, Johnnie J. Wardlow, grandchildren, Walter S. Leeds, Evelyn K. Wardlow, and Charles H. Wardlow; eight great-grandchildren; siblings, Veronica Chapman and Paul Shattuck of Isleta Pueblo, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Isadora's life has been full and varied. As a young Haskell graduate, she was first employed as a telegraph operator at the Laguna Train Station. After marriage to George Sarracino in 1946 she raised her daughter, Johnnie, and volunteered at the Laguna Day School and the Public Health Service. In 1955, she began full-time work with the Laguna Health Clinic as a clerk typist. She rose to the position of Health Center Director, responsible for administration of not only Laguna, but also the community health programs in Acoma and Canoncito. Isadora retired in 1979, but this milestone was also just the beginning of her active community service. She was appointed to the Elder Abuse Code Committee by the Tribal Council. The council wrote the code adopted by the pueblo in 1993. She also served as a Tribal Court Advocate and was appointed to the Special Advocate Steering Committee in 1997. As a long standing member of the state and national North American Indian Woman's Association she held several state offices and was on the state and national Indian Council on Aging. She has served as chair and other offices for the Laguna Elderly Association.
