On March 9, 2017, a wonderful man left us. Howard Sapon was born in Brooklyn, NY, on March 11, 1931, to Leonard Sapon and Anna Jaffe. Howie grew up in Brooklyn, playing stickball in the streets and becoming president of his class at Brooklyn High School.
After a stint in the Navy, he held a number of small jobs until friends told him he could find a steady one at a certain life insurance company. He applied and was hired. It was only later he found out his friends received a $100 finder's fee. But as fate would have it, insurance was a perfect fit for him.
In 1973, he moved to New Mexico and founded the Champion Life Insurance Agency. He received many awards and much recognition through his business. He married Joan Gentile in 1984. Together, they traveled the world.
He is survived by second wife, Joan; first wife, Marilyn Stock; son, Kenneth Sapon and wife, Annie; and daughter, Karyn Anderson, and husband, Britt. He also leaves behind grandsons, Sam Sapon, Justin Anderson, and Braden Anderson; and granddaughter, Leslie Sapon. Also surviving him are his stepchildren, Allison, Craig, and Keith Gentile; and step-grandchildren, Jack Gentile and Lauren Patton.
Howie was a man of high standards and intellect. We will miss him greatly, along with his gift of humor.
The family wishes to thank the numerous employees of OnPointe Hospice Care for their assistance, especially Liz Marcus, with whom Howie developed a spirited friendship. Without the care and support of OnPointe, we would not have been able to honor Howie's wish to die in his own bed at home.
If you would like to make a donation in Howie's name, he would appreciate it being made to the Heart Hospital at 504 Elm St., Albuquerque, which made it possible for him to live two days short of his 86th birthday.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, March 15, 2017, 10:00 a.m., at Congregation Albert, 3800 Louisiana NE, with a reception following.
