Helen Yarrington

d. February 29, 2016

Helen Yarrington, aged 95, died peacefully at 9:10PM on February 29, 2016, at a palliative care facility in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She had undergone surgery for a broken hip due to a fall two weeks prior to her death and was unable to recover from the trauma associated with that injury. Helen was a lifelong resident of Putnam, Illinois, where she was born and spent essentially her entire life. She had moved recently to an assisted living facility in Albuquerque to be closer to immediate family.
Helen was born August 18, 1920, to Francis and Ruby (Heininger) Murphy. She had four brothers, Lloyd, Kenneth, Allen and Charles, and one sister, Maxine Alstrin, who preceded her in death. She is survived by one sister, Mary Jean (Clarence) Kelly of Henry, Illinois.
Helen was married to Maurice Meredith on April 14, 1946, in the Putnam Christian Church and was later married to Frank Yarrington on September 12, 1957, in Lincoln, Illinois. Both husbands are deceased. She has one son Paul (Marsha) Yarrington by the first marriage. She has three grandchildren, Jennifer (John) Mesich, Andrew Yarrington, and Bridget Yarrington, and three great-grandchildren, Sarah, Conor and Morgan. All of her immediate family resides in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Helen graduated from Senachwine High School in Putnam and attended Brown's Business College in Peoria, Illinois. Following college, she worked in secretarial positions at the State Department of Public Health in Springfield, Illinois, the Federal Power Commission in Washington, DC and the U.S. Treasury Department in Chicago, Illinois. She also worked at the Henry State Bank and for many years as bookkeeper at the Putnam Grain Company.
Helen served as a member of the Senachwine Township Board and the Judge of Elections in Putnam County. She was a member of the Putnam Christian Church and was an organist at the church for many years. She loved her church family in Putnam, and was grateful for the many good friends and neighbors she had in the Putnam area over the years.
Helen loved her home, where both she and her father were born. She enjoyed attending to the flowers and other yard work that helped make her home such a delightful place for family and friends to visit. What made her home so very special, however, was Helen, with the warmth and humor that came so naturally to her. She was generous, kind and compassionate to all. She was well loved. She will be greatly missed, and will be very fondly remembered.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00PM on Monday, March 14, 2016, at the Putnam Christian Church. Flowers are welcome. Contributions in memory of Helen can be made to the church.
