Helen Glanz, 100, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother was received into the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, March 9, 2021. Helen was born on October 4, 1920, in Granger, Ohio to Oise and Luella Perrin. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, of 57 years; her parents; and her granddaughter, Autumn Atencio Gomez. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Scott; son, Michael Glanz (Sandee); and daughter, Jan Atencio (Paul). Helen is also survived by seven grandchildren, Kristen Pavlik, Erik Scott, Deborah Dickson, Dawn Mace, Tara Glanz, Alyssa Downey, and Christopher Atencio; 11 great-grandchildren; her brother, Richard Perrin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Helen grew up in Medina, Ohio and graduated from Medina High School. Growing up in Medina one of her favorite things was attending the Saturday night band concerts. In the early 1940's, she joined her father Oise in visiting Oregon. They saw the beauty of it and shortly thereafter the family relocated to Oregon. It was in Portland that a friend introduced her to John. She and John were married in Cleveland, Ohio shortly before the end of WWII. Helen worked as a sign painter for 18 years for J. J. Newberry's and as a secretary for an insurance agency in Portland, Oregon.
She loved to travel, making several trips to Ohio, California, and Texas to visit relatives and friends. She especially loved family trips to the Oregon Coast. On one trip, Helen was proud to stand mid-field at Texas Stadium in Irving, though not a sports fan. In their retirement years, John and Helen would join friends at Portland's Norse Hall and dance until the wee hours of the morning, often enjoying early morning breakfasts with friends. Helen and John loved walking together in the mornings and going on day road trips. Before moving to Albuquerque in 1999, John and Helen would travel to New Mexico to visit family, especially enjoying balloon watching.
Helen excelled in cross-stitch, china painting, and card stamping. One of her favorite subjects was lighthouses. She loved gardening and the beauty of flowers. Her steadfast faith in Jesus and her prayers for her beloved family impacted her children, her grandchildren and continues with her great-grandchildren.
A private interment will be held at the Santa Fe National Cemetery where she will join her husband John. A Memorial Service will follow on Friday, March 19, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Faith Evangelical Free Church, 900 Southern Blvd. SE, Rio Rancho, NM. The memorial service will be available by live stream to those unable to attend in person.
