Harriet S. (Shapiro) Shane

April 14, 1930 — June 22, 2022

Harriet Shapiro Shane, 92 of Springhill, FL passed away on Wednesday, June 22, 2022. Born to Morris and Rose Shapiro on April 14, 1930 in Brooklyn, NY. She was an accomplished artist and graduated from the Pratt Institute of Art with a Bachelors Degree of Fine Arts, becoming the first person in her family to attend college, with her parents' blessings and support.

After meeting her handsome husband, Joseph Shane, they quickly started their family of three children, Susan, Donald, and Judith. After just a few years living in NJ, they made a move to Baltimore, MD, which was their home for 35 years until they moved to Ft. Myers, FL. Harriet continued her pursuit of an art career, while raising her busy family. She attended the Maryland Institute of Art, where she received her Masters of Fine Arts while teaching art in the Baltimore County Schools and later becoming a supervisor of the art programs in the schools.

When Harriet retired she made a career change. She studied for her G.I.A {Gemological Institute of America) certification, learning all about gemstones, jewelry and appraisals, often recruiting her children as study partners, and eventually worked as an appraiser for many jewelry stores. Harriet and Joe were married for 66 wonderful years and were fortunate to travel the world purchasing art and jewelry (Harriet always with her "loop" in her purse) ready to inspect any possible jewelry purchase. They enjoyed each other's company in all settings imaginable. She was a tough, loving, and fiercely protective Mom, instilling in her children a strong Jewish faith, love of art, music, and compassion.

She will be remembered as a loving wife, daughter, sister, and mother who had a compassionate heart and the highest degree of integrity. Her family was her world, and everything she did was to benefit them. A constant source of pride were her children, Susan Shadoff (Dr. Neal Shadoff), Donald Shane, and Judith Shane (Robert Burnham); grandchildren, Adam Shadoff (Jodi Ewart Shadoff), Rachel Cobb (Nathan), Justin Shane (Dina Delaurentis Shane), Lindsay Shane, Elizabeth Fornari (Dr. Eric), and Meredith Sherman (Ian Salter); and her six-great grandchildren, Eleanor Cobb, Miles Cobb, Reese Fornari, Theo Fornari, Louie Salter and Dino Delaurentis Shane. Harriet was preceded in death by her parents, Morris and Rose Shapiro; husband, Dr. Joseph Shane; and sister, Dorothy Yospe.

Graveside Services will be held Sunday, July 3, 2022, 10:30 a.m., at Fairview Memorial Park, 700 Yale Blvd. SE, with Rabbi Arthur Flicker presiding.
