Harriet Knighten passed away peacefully on March 28, 2017. She was beloved by so many people. She was a great mom, wife, grandmother, friend and mentor. Her joy for life spread to the many that knew and loved her. She grew up in Brooklyn, NY where she enjoyed the freedom of a kinder time in a big city. She moved to Albuquerque, quite accidently, and stayed here the rest of her life.
She enjoyed a long career in APS. She first worked as an elementary school teacher and then, after earning her Masters in school counseling, had a long career in counseling. She loved her work, changed many lives and leaves a great legacy.
In her younger years, she enjoyed horseback riding, dancing, hiking, swimming, theatre and more. Recently she enjoyed Tai Chi, walking, book club, travel, meeting with friends and continuing advocacy for school counselors and mental health.
She is survived by her daughter, Iris Fanning; son, David Frenkel; son in law, Ken Fanning; grandsons, Sean Fanning and Merlin Frenkel; step-daughter, Kathy Lobato with Mike Lobato; step-granddaughter, Micah Merriman and husband, Carlos; her "sister's" family, Athena and Cal Sawyer, their children and grandchildren. Her beloved husband, Rodney Knighten, passed away about a year earlier.
