Our beloved father, Harold E. Richter, passed safely home into the arms of the Lord on January 25, 2016, after 96 years with us. Harold was born in Laredo, TX on June 5, 1919, the fifth child of Charles and Annie Richter. He attended Texas A&M College until joining the United States Navy in 1941. Serving as a naval aviator during World War II, he flew numerous combat missions off aircraft carriers in the Pacific theatre and had a decorated war record.
Harold married our mother, Hazel Marie Shockley, a Navy nurse on December 18, 1948 and together they raised a family of three children. After 20 years on active duty and also serving in the Korean War, Harold retired in 1962 as a Lieutenant commander. Returning to south Texas he completed college at Texas A&M - Corpus Christi on the GI bill and had a second career as an accountant for the city of Corpus Christi. During this time he enjoyed his family, traveling with mom, and working in his yard with his citrus trees. Dad and mom moved to Albuquerque, NM in June 1996 to be closer to family. In December 1998, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, and our mother passed away on May 15, 1999. Dad lived out most of his last years surrounded by family, friends, and excellent health care attendants at the Village of Alameda. He loved attending his grandkid's sporting events, playing with his great grandkids, barbequing on the grill, and playing horseshoes and acey-deucy.
Harold and Hazel are survived by their three children and their spouses, Dr. Joel Richter and Marci from Tampa, FL, Ron Richter and Toni of Albuquerque, NM, and Sharon Chandler and Scott from Placitas, NM. They were blessed with five beloved grandchildren, Nicole and Dr. Steve Bomeli, Mandy and Jake Crider, Dr. Dustin and Lynsey Richter, Dr. Brian Richter and girlfriend Ashley Wheeler, and Jason Richter and fiancée Samantha Kreindel. They were also blessed with six energetic great grandchildren, Alec, Caroline, Dylan, Cole, Tyler, and Reid.
Our dad was a patriot, businessman, and most importantly a family man who set an example of family values for his children and grandchildren. We will miss him greatly but know he will be with his beloved wife, Hazel in eternal peace.
Memorial services will be on Saturday, February 6, 2016, 11:00 a.m., at Chester T. French Memorial Mausoleum Chapel, 924 Menaul Blvd, NE followed by a graveside burial with military honors for both Harold and Hazel.
