Gus Lopez, 77, passed away Sunday, January 24, 2021 in his home in Albuquerque, NM. He was the husband of Susan A. Lopez. They shared 42 years of marriage together. Gus was born on May 28, 1943 in San Francisco, CA. He was the son of Pablo and Siria Lopez, and brother to Paul Lopez and Josie Williams, all who preceded him in death.
He enlisted in the Air Force at the age of 17 and served 4 years. After completing his service, he pursued his education and obtained his master’s degree in Counseling and Administration, which he used to teach and counsel in the New Mexico public schools for almost 30 years. Gus was a member of the St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church. He enjoyed traveling and experiencing new places and had an affinity for the ocean. He often referred to himself as "a barefoot boy from the backwoods of Northern New Mexico", but his heart was for the coast. Gus loved good music, and even wrote and played his own original compositions. His love and talent for music has extended to his grandchildren as well. He loved sports and was an avid New Mexico Lobo fan. If he wasn't watching a game, you can bet he was listening to it.
He adored his seven grandchildren and loved watching them grow up. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor, practical wisdom and insight. He is survived by his wife, Susan; his son, Andy; his son, Issac and his wife, Kristi; his daughter, Felicia; and his seven grandchildren, Brittany, Monet, Courtney, Caleb, Issac Jr., Jocelyn, and Liliana.
Funeral Services will be held at Church of the Incarnation, 2309 Monterrey Rd NE, Rio Rancho, NM 87144. There will be a viewing at 10:00 a.m., followed by a Rosary at 10:30 a.m. and a Mass at 11:00 a.m. Gus will then be buried at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe, NM at 1:30 p.m. However, due to Covid Protocol and Restrictions, only the immediate family will be permitted to attend.
