Ginger Contreras

Virginia "Ginger" Contreras, a long-time resident of Albuquerque, NM went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 29, 2024, at the age of 84. She was born on a kitchen table in Boston, MA, to Otto and Dorothy Van Schaick on August 10, 1939. A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother; Ginger was loved by all who knew her. 

A professional artist, Ginger’s oil paintings can be found in many homes throughout Albuquerque. She enjoyed traveling and was able to visit 48 states. Ginger liked movie nights, and canning peaches from her tree. She loved music, crafting, shopping, and most of all, her family.

Ginger was preceded in death by her parents Otto and Dorothy, her loving husband Larry, sister Elaine, son-in-law Tony, and grandson Michael.

She is survived by her sister Claudia, her children; daughter Kathy Perea, son Kent Contreras and wife Michelle; grandchildren, Paul Perea and wife Christy, Kevin Perea, Carly Contreras, and Matthew Contreras; and four great-grandchildren, Kevin Jr., Amber, Jocelyn, and Adriane.

Ginger was a dedicated homemaker who enjoyed spending time with her family. We all loved sitting around the kitchen table eating her delicious cooking and listening to her laugh. Her favorite pastimes were traveling, painting, hanging with the Red Hatters, sewing, and decorating for the holidays. Her Christmas trees were dazzling, her dining tables spectacular, and her gardens will be remembered for generations. 

Truly a light has left the world with her passing. She will forever be missed and always be in our hearts and memories.

A rosary is scheduled for 7 pm Tuesday April 9, 2024 at French’s Funeral Home on 10500 Lomas. Mass will be held at the Shrine of St. Bernadette at 10 am April 10, 2024, 11509 Indian School Rd NE with graveside services to follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
