Dr. Gerald N. Gold, MD, prominent neurosurgeon serving the Albuquerque NM community for over 30 years, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on Sunday, May 12, 2024, after battling several years of a nerve degenerating disease and at least two strokes. The Gold family extends their appreciation to the staffs of UNM Hospital, Comfort Keepers, and Advanced Healthcare who provided kindness and attention to Jerry over recent years.
Jerry was born on February 10, 1939 in Denver CO, graduated East High School, Colorado University and Colorado Medical School. He did his residency in Boston at Massachusetts General Hospital and was an officer in the Public Health Service Corps, an arm of the US Coast Guard, at the National Institute of Health’s NINDB in D.C. Jerry returned to Mass General Hospital for his neurosurgical residency, then settled in Albuquerque in 1970 to join Neurosurgical Associates.
Jerry dedicated 30+ years of his life working tirelessly and selflessly to help his patients combat a wide range of often life-threatening neurological and brain affecting ailments and injuries – saving hundreds of lives along the way. Ironically, Jerry’s life ended as a result of some of these same afflictions he helped so many others survive.
Jerry supported charitable organizations in Albuquerque and was especially partial to the New Mexico Philharmonic Orchestra, The University of New Mexico Hospital, and Albuquerque Animal Humane Society.
When not working, Jerry spent time with his family, friends, and dogs, enjoying his many hobbies, including boating, fly fishing, waterskiing, snow skiing, reading, watching sports and TV/movies. Upon retiring, Jerry taught himself sewing, photography, computer programming, computer repair, cooking, Spanish, drawing and painting, and the list goes on. He was an amateur at many of these but loved them all the same.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lindy (Davis) Gold; son, Andrew Gold (Colleen Gold) of Houston and Jennifer (Gold) Ades of Denver; grandchildren, Caitlyn (Gold) Schroeder (Christopher Schroeder), Jessica Gold, Elana Ades, and Mari Ades; and beloved dog, Cody. Jerry was followed in death by his sister, Florence (Gold) Alberts of San Francisco on May 15, 2024.
In recognition of Jerry’s dedication to the neurological field and to help support the efforts to defeat the types of neurological disorders that took his health and ultimately his life, please join the Gold family in making a donation in memory of Jerry to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) in lieu of flowers or other gifts. The NINDS, where Jerry served his 2 years of active military duty, is committed to building fundamental knowledge about the brain and nervous system and to use that knowledge to reduce the burden of neurological disease.
