George Edwin Luecker, 94, passed away peacefully April 1, 2016 at the Hospice House of St. Mary's in Callaway, MD, surrounded by loving family. He was born on August 20, 1921 in Manitowoc, WI to the late Edwin and Adeline (Hinz) Luecker.
George graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin in June of 1944 and joined the US Army on October 22, 1945 in Chicago, IL where he spent his enlistment time assisting in the development of microwave relay equipment until his honorable discharge December 8, 1946 at Fort Monmouth, NJ. On May 3, 1952 in Washington, DC he married the love of his life, L. Eleanor "Johnnie" Johnson, who passed away on November 5, 2004. George was accompanied by Johnnie on most of his widely scattered overseas assignments as Technical Advisor for the FAA, where his career was greatly enhanced by her steadfast support and engaging nature. George balanced challenging technical overseas assignments with being a loving father and devoted husband. George and Johnnie raised their daughter and three sons (two adopted from Greece while stationed there) with kindness, compassion, wisdom and love. George retired from the FAA as Chief of the Middle East and Africa International Aviation Division in 1980 and with Johnnie began new adventures in their beloved New Mexico. Here they continued to be active in various volunteer activities, such as Presbyterian Hospital, Albuquerque International Sunport, Meals on Wheels and St. John's UMC among others. George and Johnnie especially loved frequently hosting family and friends for the annual Albuquerque International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta. Following up on what they had learned during multiple visits to the Middle East, they became and remained passionate advocates for the cause of the Palestinians displaced from their homeland.
Beloved father of Aubin Luecker (Susan), Wendy Thomas (Bill), Gary Luecker (Angel), and Andrew Luecker (Sherry), and grandfather of Meredith, Alec, and Justin Luecker. He is also survived by his sisters Marian Turk and Florence Luecker, as well as his "adopted" LaBranch family (Matt, Abby, and their children Nicolle, Michelle, Isabelle, Blaise and Beau) and "adopted" Al-Kadhimi family (Saad, Ayser, and their sons Abdullah and Ali).
A memorial service is planned for May 7, 2016 at St. John's UMC in Albuquerque, NM at 11am.
