George Eugene Henriquez

November 8, 1918 — August 15, 2013

HENRIQUEZ, GEORGE EUGENE Age 94, a resident of Albuquerque since 1962, died on Thursday, August 15, 2013. He is survived by his wife, Joyce; daughter, Leah and husband Mark Ready; sister, Pearl and husband, Frank Varon (Tampa, FL); cousin, Richard Henriquez and wife, Antoinette (Odessa, FL); several nieces and nephews; and many cats. George was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Oliva Henriquez; and his brothers, Rex and Joe Henriquez. Born on November 8, 1918, in Tampa, FL., George grew up during the Depression and played football for Plant High. He served in the Army Air Corps as a bombardier in the Aleutians during WWII. After the war he joined the Air Force and became a member of the Special Weapons program, where he served at Manzano Base and at RAF Alconbury in England. Upon retirement in 1962, he and his family moved to Albuquerque and George enrolled at UNM, earning a teaching degree. He taught electronics at Job Corps for several years and, in his spare time, made beautiful turquoise and silver jewelry which he sold at the New Mexico Arts and Crafts Fair for 14 years. Then, he and Joyce began the Albuquerque Arts and Crafts Committee and produced two arts and crafts shows, a year for many years. George liked reading, doing crossword puzzles and listening to music. Nothing pleased him more than eating tomatoes fresh from the garden, challah bread and figs. He had an irrepressible sense of humor, played practical jokes and could solve any problem. He was an intelligent, creative individual who valued family, friends and pets. Thank you to his primary care doctors Russell Schultz and Daniel Friedman and to Presbyterian Hospice and Janet Morse for their care of George in his last year. Services will be held on Thursday, August 22, 2013 at 10:30 A.M., at FRENCH - University. Burial will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals New Mexico (PETA-NM). FRENCH - University 1111 University Blvd NE 505-843-6333
