George “Ted” Fries, died July 25, 2018. His birthplace, Dixon, IL shaped his life. He grew up on the river.
In 1962 he brought his family to Albuquerque. Even in the desert he gravitated to water; always owned a boat, served in the Coast Guard Auxiliary at Conchas Lake, and in his final years made daily visits to Tingley Beach. Like the river he was a constant presence in our lives.
He was a pragmatist and knew the value of solid construction. As an engineer he drew on his early experience as a surveyor in the cornfields of Illinois, understood the importance of precision, logical thinking, and thoroughness. He was about stability and common sense. He had a gift for problem solving. We remember him for his constancy, always steady at the helm.
He shared his craftsmanship with family – one year a dollhouse, other years a potter’s wheel, a model railroad suspended from the ceiling, a row boat, and hand hewn furnishings. He was forever there with a helping hand and a practical solution.
He was a devoted family man, caring for his wife, Margery for over 20 years following her debilitating stroke. He was preceded in death by Margery and his sister, Mary Anne Klingbiel. He is survived by his daughter, Barbara and her husband, Justin; his grandchildren, Jessie Fries-Kraemer, Gabriel Fries-Briggs and Warren Price. The family plans to honor George in a private service later this summer.
