George Duran, 91, of Albuquerque, passed away March 13, 2017. He is survived by the mother of his children, Connie M. Sanchez; his daughters, Sylvia A. M. Tapia, Gloria J. Morris (David) and Victoria Elisa Duran (Mark R. Crockett); his grandchildren, Paul Tapia (Stephanie), Robert Tapia, Joe Romero, Annette M. Romero, Michael Duran (Sabrina), Shelley Hansen (Zach) and Lisa M. Lucero; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; his brother, Mike Duran (Carmen); his sister-in-law, Isabel Duran and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mike Duran, Sr. and Josephina Duran; his son-in-law, Henry Tapia, Sr., his grandson, Henry G. Tapia, Jr.; his brothers, Phillip Duran, Joe Duran and Albert Duran and his sister, Pauline Ruiz.
Mr. Duran proudly served in the Navy and fought 65 battles at sea during World War II, mainly in the Pacific Ocean aboard the USS Santa Fe CL-60. He also served 21 years in the Merchant Marines.
A Rosary will be held Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 1860 Griegos Road NW in Albuquerque. A Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at 9:00 a.m., also at the church. The Celebrant will be Rev. Joe Vigil. Interment will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. Pallbearers will be Paul Tapia, Paul Luke Tapia, Joe Romero, Joseph Romero, Robert Tapia, Derek Tapia, Michael Duran and David Morris.
