Genevieve Lillian B. Simpson, age 90, a resident of Albuquerque for the past two years, died Sunday, May 11, 2014. She was born to Henry A. and Edith M. Flagg Bender in 1923 in Brooklyn, NY. Genevieve was a graduate of Flushing Hospital School of Nursing and did graduate work in operating room nursing and supervision at Manhasset Medical Center, NY. She worked for many years as a surgical nurse and operating room supervisor in New York, Nevada and Virginia. Genevieve met Hugh E. Simpson in 1942. He was a patient of hers and was flying supplies into North Africa with the Naval Reserve and Pan American Airways. They were married on July 17, 1943 and were a happy couple for thirty-five years until his death in 1977. Following her husband Hugh's career moves with the CIA, she volunteered work at pediatric and family planning clinics in Turkey, Ghana and the Philippines. A lifelong swimmer, she loved the beach and had an extensive collection of sea shells which she started while in the Philippines. She loved to entertain and was known for her dinner parties, including both comfort and ethnic gourmet cooking. She was preceded in death by her sister, Florence Walsh and is survived by her children, Hugh A. Simpson and wife Melissa Page of Los Lunas, NM and Linda Simpson-Kouts and husband Paul Kouts of Albuquerque; her beloved granddaughter in whose life she was very involved, providing many opportunities for travel and education, Meg S. Parrott and husband Troy; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and their families. She will be missed as the matriarch and "keeper of the records." Cremation has taken place and a memorial gathering will take place Friday, May 23, 2014 from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m.at FRENCH - Wyoming, with a brief sharing of memories at 3:00 p.m. Interment will take place on July 7, 2014 in Falls Church, VA at National Memorial Park. Fifty years after working at Walter Reed Army Hospital, Genevieve remained a continued supporter of Paralyzed Veterans of America.
