Gary Robert Wold, age 70, passed away at home December 31, 2021, with his wife, JulieAnn (de Kok) at his side. His beloved pets, Duke (cat) and Nicky (Red Eared Slider Turtle) were nearby. Gary was predeceased by his parents William and Maxine Wold.
Gary grew up in Chicago, Illinois. He remembered his Little League and hooligan days fondly. Gary attended the University of Illinois Urbana - Champaign where he studied Journalism and was the Daily Illini Sports Writer. Our plans are not often "the plan". He was the Lighting and Equipment Manager for several bands before moving to Albuquerque. He appreciated the fun and bizarre events that happened when traveling to and attending gigs and the connections with his friends, when he was in Chicago. Gary earned his B.A. in History at the University of New Mexico, while working for the New Mexico Human Services Department. He retired in 2013.
Gary always had his love of Journalism, Sports, Music, and Politics. They were all equal. He was a lifelong White Sox fan and tried hard in recent years with the Chicago Bears. 1985 and 2005 were good years. He followed the fighting Illini and attended many Lobo games. He was a horse racing fan and attended live racing at different tracks including one Kentucky Derby. He was interested in all kinds of music. He saw The Beatles at Comiskey Park and attended many Rock and Roll and Blues concerts throughout his life. He went to performances of the Chicago Symphony, New Mexico Philharmonic, and The Nutcracker annual ballet at the Kimo Theater. Gary liked going to museums, reading, and growing flowers and tomatoes in containers.
Gary leaves behind many friends and co-workers who became close friends in Chicago and Albuquerque. They appreciated his sharp wit, humor, and observations of life. They will miss the often-taken advice he offered when he was asked.
