Gary Sloan, a long time resident of New Mexico, passed away on September 14, 2021, in Albuquerque. He was born in Wink, Texas, and was 86 years old. He loved his wife Mona, his family, football, cowboy boots, and Tabasco sauce!
Gary graduated from Hobbs High School, home of the Screamin’ Eagles, in 1954. There he met Ramona Mendez, his high school sweetheart. He married the love of his life in 1960. They were married for 61 years.
He earned his Bachelor’s Degree at UNM and moved on to complete his Master’s Degree from Springfield College in Massachusetts. Gary spent most of his life coaching football. He began his coaching career at Hobbs High School where he earned The New Mexico Coach of the Year honor in 1961. He then went on to coach collegiate football at the New Mexico Military Institute, University of New Mexico, University of Idaho, and Colorado State University. He also coached New Mexico’s first semi-professional football team, the Thunderbirds.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 22, at 11:00 a.m., at Our Lady of Fatima church in Albuquerque. The Rite of Committal will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery.
Gary Sloan is survived by his wife Ramona, daughter Gina Casey and her husband Mike, son Todd Sloan and his wife Belinda and was blessed with five grandchildren; Sienna, Breezy and her husband AJ, Cody, Tara, and Castina and his great grandchildren, Jaylen, Elijah, Alex, Serenity, and Angel. Gary is also survived by his brother, Jim Sloan.
