Fred Guy Wells (Guy Frederick Wells)
April 15, 1926 - November 14, 2024
Fred Guy Wells was born to Guy Raymond Wells and Evelyn Grace (Gillcrest) Wells on April 15, 1926 in Joplin, Mo. Fred is survived by his wife Charline Wells of Albuquerque, NM. He was the proud father of Andrea Patrice Wells of White Fish, Montana, Guy Morgan Wells of Denver, Colorado and Joseph Bryan Wells, partner Daria Biziewska and grandson Henry Frederick Wells, of Edinburgh, Scotland.
At 18 he relocated to eastern Colorado where he found a job as a Lineman with Mountain Bell Telephone & Telegraph Co. He dug holes for telephone poles and was one of the few members of the crew who had the strength to dig the hole and erect it, without the help of other crew members. In his time with Mountain Bell he worked his way up through the ranks. He began as a lineman, became a foreman, then a Wire Chief, then a District Supervisor, then a Division Supervisor and retired as Vice President of Marketing.
Fred was a legend in the field of Corporate Performance Improvement, Training, Development and Education. His responsibilities included building the Mountain Bell Training & Education Center. A state of the art facility designed to accelerate learning, training and performance for all levels of corporate employees. Dignitaries from around the world came to tour the Training Center, one of the first "Corporate Universities" to learn from the ground breaking work being accomplished there. Following his assignment at the training center, he moved to contract negotiations which created the "Baby Bells" and opened the Bell System infrastructure for use by independent telephone companies. This significant restructuring of the Bell System opened the opportunity for marketing of telephone services. This created another ground breaking opportunity for Fred to become the Vice President of Marketing for US West from which he retired after a total 40 years of service.
Not one to remain retired for long, Fred started through his 'bucket list' of things he always wanted to do when he and, his wife, Charline, moved to Albuquerque. He began scuba diving and soon opened The Scuba Company in Albuquerque. Becoming owner/operator of a small business afforded him the opportunity to apply all those business/marketing/training skills he had refined after 40 years in the corporate world.
Fred was not only a skilled businessman, but was also knowledgeable in many other areas of life. He was a black diamond skier, and a fly fisherman. Along with scuba diving, he loved sailing and was a certified coastal navigator.
Throughout life Fred was a self-starter, an avid learner, and a hard worker. He was generous, diligent, and had a deep sense of commitment.
He was a always a gentleman and the epitome of a Renaissance Man.
