Fred "Alfredo" Baca, 70, a lifelong resident of New Mexico, died peacefully in his sleep Sunday, December 28, 2014. He is survived by his wife, Kathie Esquibel-Baca; his son, Alfred Baca; sisters, Jeanette, Juliette, Theresa, and Elizabeth, and brothers Joseph, Eresmo and Jesse; as well as a large, extended family. Fred was preceded in death by his parents, William and Margaret Baca. He was born and raised in Las Vegas, NM. He served honorably in the United States Air Force, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He attended Highlands University and the University of New Mexico. Fred had a long career in radio and television broadcasting, starting with KFUN radio station in Las Vegas, NM in the mid-1970s. He was the Program Director and announcer at the original Spanish radio station in Albuquerque, KABQ. He was general manager of several radio stations in Albuquerque, eventually becoming part of the news team at KLUZ-TV Channel 41 Univision, where he served as sports director. He hosted the weekly TV show "Poquito De Todo" on cable channel 29, and also the live political show, "Que Tal Nuevo Mexico," on Telemundo. In 2013, Fred completed his broadcasting career by producing a Spanish news program for his beloved KFUN. Fred had a very distinct voice and was known as "La Voz de Albuquerque" and "The Spanish Voice of New Mexico." Just before retiring and focusing more on his artwork, he worked at Intersections, assisting victims of identity theft. He will be remembered for his voice, his love of Latin music and life, his gentleness and very good heart. A Memorial will be held at FRENCH - University on Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. the same day. A reception will follow at the Marriot Courtyard in Santa Fe, 3347 Cerrillos Road, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Should friends desire, donations may be made in Fred's honor to the UNM Cancer Center, MSC07-4025, 1 University New Mexico, 1201 Camino de Salud NE, Albuquerque, NM 87131-0001.
