Frank Lee Vito was born on July 20, 1923 in Kane, Pennsylvania to Dominic Vito and Grace Tornatora. Frank was one of nine siblings.
He graduated from Kane High School in 1941. He joined the US Navy in 1942 and served on the USS Omaha as a Fire Control Director during WWII. His naval group participated in multiple campaigns including the South Atlantic and Mediterranean. He was discharged in 1945. Later that year he enlisted in the US Army and served in the Korean War. He held various positions during his Army career, including White House Courier for the Pentagon for Presidents Truman and Eisenhower, the Atomic Energy Commission, Engineers, and the 833rd Ordinance Division. He retired in 1964. Highest rank obtained was Captain. He graduated from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor's degree in Military Science in 1958. He accomplished this while raising a family of five children and working fulltime.
He is survived by all of his children, Francesca, Beverly, Lisa, Frank and Claire. He met Helen Bonney in Washington, DC during a USO event. They both worked at the Pentagon and they married on September 2, 1948. After his Military career, he worked for Van Waters and Rogers in Scientific Sales as a Field Rep. He went on to join the US Civil service, working at Air Force Contract Management Division, followed by an assignment to the Defense Nuclear Agency as a Logistics Engineer in the Standardization Branch, until 1985 when he officially retired.
He immersed himself in various activities such as woodworking, fishing, golfing, Volks marching and bowling. His bowling career included bowling with Lawrence Welk and many PBA bowlers. He participated in the National Senior Olympics, US Pro-Am tournaments, and the World Senior Games. He holds the record for the Highest Scratch Score (644) for 80-84 year olds in the 2007 National Senior Olympics. In 2010 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame for the World Senior Games in St George, UT. He participated in the Games for over 30 years. His last tournament was in October of 2021 where he received a Gold Medal for his age group.
He passed away peacefully on February 23, 2022.
