Frank Morath

June 4, 1942 — March 10, 2024

Frank Paul Morath, 81, Albuquerque, NM passed away peacefully Sunday morning, March 10th, 2024 at the Lifespire Assisted Living facility, where he was in Hospice Care since late January due to severe kidney illness. Frank was known to his family and friends as an effusive storyteller and often a welcomed sight at their doorsteps, including if he arrived unannounced which he sometimes happily did.

Frank was born on June 4th, 1942 to Anne (Thom) and Andrew Morath and raised in the Elmhurst neighborhood of Queens, NY, the youngest of 3 siblings. His mother and father came to the United States after WWI from East Germany and Hungary, respectively, making Frank a first-generation American. Frank graduated from Newton High School and then matriculated at Valparaiso University, from which he graduated in 1965 with a BA in economics. Frank was the first in his family to graduate college.

Following college, Frank joined the US Army and served in the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment during the Vietnam War. Like a lot of veterans of Vietnam, he rarely spoke openly about it, but Frank was proud to have fought during the Tet Offensive and to have been recognized for his service, ultimately receiving the Bronze Star Medal. During the war, Frank also had the privilege of meeting Generals Creighton Abrams and William Westmoreland.

After Frank returned home and left the service, he met his wife, Elizabeth (Schnabel) Morath, to whom he was married for nearly 51 years until she passed in 2020, after struggling with Parkison's Disease for several years. Together, Frank and Liz had four children, a daughter, who tragically died at a very young age, and three sons. Professionally, Frank went on to graduate from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1978 with an MBA in Accounting and then had a long career as a Systems Analyst. Outside the office, Frank's passions included coaching youth soccer with Wyckoff Torpedoes Soccer Club, gardening, skiing, trains, and, always the New Yorker, reading the New York Times and then passing on articles to others that he thought they might also enjoy.

A dedicated father, husband and Opa, Frank was fiercely loyal to and proud of his entire family. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Jonathan Morath (Elizabeth), Christian Morath (Treva), and Matthew Morath (Erin) and his grandchildren, Rin Rexroad, Sagan Morath, Benjamin Morath, Eason Morath and Olivia Morath. He also leaves behind many cherished nieces, nephews, and other family members. Finally, Frank is also survived by Mrs. Barbara Rollins, a close companion who made his stay at assisted living care later in life much more enjoyable.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew Morath and Anne Thom, his brother, John Morath, his sister, Marianne Lindegard, his daughter, Allyson Elizabeth Morath, and his wife, Elizabeth Morath. A visitation will be held on March 22, 2022 from 12-2pm at French Funerals and Cremations 9300 Golf Course Rd NW Albuquerque, NM 87114. A service will be held in New Jersey at a later date.
