FRANK HERRON HALEY 1940 - 2024 Albuquerque, New Mexico, has lost one of its most esteemed and beloved residents with the passing of Frank Herron Haley, the "Voice Of New Mexico," on August 7, 2024. Born on a sunny day on April 15, 1940, in Wichita Falls, Texas to Frank and Iva Haley, Frank was a true son of the west, embodying the spirit and resilience of his cherished western legacy throughout his life.
Frank's journey began at Thomas Jefferson High School, where he graduated in 1959, leaving behind a legacy of brilliance as a photographer and academic excellence. His thirst for knowledge and passion for innovation led him to Stephen F. Austin State University, where he earned his bachelor's degree in Speech & Drama in 1963. It was here that Frank laid the foundation for what would become a distinguished career dedicated to broadcasting.
Professionally, Frank was a pillar in the radio broadcasting community, known for his pivotal role as news director of Albuquerque's flagship radio station, 77 KKOB, after a long career in Texas radio at KILT and KTRH, among many others. His expertise won him many accolades, including numerous awards from the Albuquerque Press Club, Broadcaster of The Year 1987, culminating in his induction to the New Mexico Broadcasters Association Hall Of Fame 2012. Frank's work stands as a testament to his commitment to his community and his exceptional skill as a broadcaster and reporter.
In 1976, after turning his life over to the Lord, Frank's heart led him to marry his soulmate, Alice Reed. Together, they embarked on a journey of love, partnership, and family, welcoming two wonderful children into the world: Lydia and Noah, also both raising Frank's children from his previous marriage, Matthew, Mandy and Meagan. Their union was not just a marriage but a partnership that flourished in love, respect, and mutual support.
Frank's life was rich with hobbies that reflected his love for the Southwest. He was an avid horseman, a talented target shooter, and a photographer with an eye for life's simple beauties. His passion for Old West culture was more than a pastime; having grown up on horseback, Frank was as comfortable pistol-shooting from the saddle as he was running a cattle drive.
But it was his role as a father and grandfather that Frank cherished above all. The annual road trips through Texas for family reunions were the backdrop for some of the family's most treasured memories. Frank's presence was a constant at his children's various events and recitals, and his weekend grilling parties became the stuff of legend. His dedication to his community was further exemplified by his years volunteering at the Rock homeless shelter, Shoes for Orphan Souls, and helped to build a church in an impoverished area of the Ukraine.
Predeceased by his parents and his sister Judy Lou, as well as his daughter Mandy and his youngest son Noah. Frank's legacy is carried forward by his loving wife Alice; his children Matthew, Lydia, Meagan, and Todd; and his nine adoring grandchildren: Aspen, Kyndal, Autumn, Brooklyn, Blake, Brodie, Haley, Blaine, and Zane.
A service to honor Frank's life will be held on Saturday August 10, 2024, at 1:00 p.m., at Sandia Baptist Church, located at 9429 Constitution Avenue NE, Albuquerque, New Mexico. In a fitting tribute to a man who loved his community, in lieu of flowers, love offerings may be made to his home church in his name to Sandia Baptist Church Missions. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks for the outpouring of love and support during this time.
Reflecting on Frank's life, speakers will include Dan Rosecrans, Dewey Moede, KOB weatherman Steve Stucker, Frank's eldest son Matthew, and son-in-law Tracy Crandall, as well as a special farewell audio message from Frank himself.
Frank Haley was a man of integrity, a beacon of love for his family, and a man who never met a stranger. His legacy will continue to inspire, and his memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
