Frank B. Gilmer, Jr. age 92, left this earthly existence on Thursday, July 30, 2020. An Albuquerque native, he attended Eugene Field Elementary, Lincoln Jr. High (Editor of the Sand Hill News), Albuquerque High (Editor of the Record), and University of New Mexico (Bachelor of Science in Education and member of Phi Delta Kappa International honorary). He earned a Master’s in Business Administration at the University of Denver, where he was inducted into Delta Pi Epsilon, National Honorary Professional Graduate Society in Business Education.
Employment while still in high school included that of wet wash boy at Sanitary Laundry, newspaper carrier and night clerk at Albuquerque Publishing Company (Journal-Tribune) with a promotion to display advertising salesman after graduation. Drafted into the Army during the Korean conflict, he served two years in the artillery at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, attaining the rank of corporal and graduating from The Adjutant General’s School as a Personnel Management Specialist. Upon discharge, he attended college, utilizing the GI Bill of Rights.
His business teaching career began at Valley High (nine years) followed by Del Norte High (one year), then in an administrative position as Business Education Specialist at Central Office (nineteen years). Upon retirement from Albuquerque Public Schools, he served as Advertising Manager for the Rio Rancho Observer for several years, followed by five years as Business Education instructor and supervisor at Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute (SIPI).
Active in Albuquerque’s First Baptist Church all his life, he served as a Royal Ambassador member, Sunday School teacher, Senior Adult Newsletter Editor, Trustee, and Deacon.
Private services will be held at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
