Frances (Serrano) Madrid

Frances Madrid, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and businesswoman passed away peacefully in her home at the age of 94, surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, October 8, 2019. Frances was born the sixth of eight children in the small town of Youngsville, NM, to Leandro and Eva Serrano. Frances learned early on the value of hard work and began setting goals for herself. Frances worked during the summers as a helper and companion for Georgia O’Keefe, assisting her with daily tasks and accompanying her on walks and picking flowers, which would later be used in her paintings. She married the love of her life, Jose Leandro Madrid, with whom she had three children. They worked together to design and build the home that she lived in until her death. Frances had foresight and a natural sense for business, especially real estate, as she bought, managed and maintained properties. Frances was a self-taught risk-taker, unafraid to invest in the future. She was very independent, especially for a female of her era. She loved caring for and enjoying her beautiful roses. Frances was an active volunteer at the North Valley Senior Center for 25 years and rarely missed a day. She was known for dressing nicely and her dedication to the center. She had a loyal pet companion, Tito for 16 years, with whom she loved spending time. Above it all, she loved her family and taught us the value of hard work, determination, and importance of loving and supporting each other.

She is preceded in death by her ex-husband, Jose Leandro Madrid; her parents, Leandro and Eva Serrano; her brothers, Bill Serrano, Medardo Serrano, and Anselmo Serrano; and siblings who passed away in childhood, Leandro Serrano, Reynaldo Serrano, Edumenio Serrano, and Adelina Serrano.

She is survived by her daughter, Helen (Leta) Abousleman and husband Ron Abouselman; her son, Lee Madrid and wife, Dolores Madrid; her daughter, Evette Sachs and husband Robert Sachs; grandchildren,Tamara Abousleman and wife Lori Ortiz, Greg Abousleman and wife Griselda Abousleman, Mona Abousleman Lee and husband Kevin Lee, Lee Madrid Jr and wife Natalie Madrid, Timothy Madrid and wife Alexandria Madrid, Adam Madrid, Aaron Madrid, Ben Sachs, Luke Sachs, Robert Sachs, and Joel Sachs; great-grandchildren, Alex Lee, Julia Lee, Briana Leal, Gabriela Abousleman, Gregory Abousleman, Jada Madrid, Sienna Madrid, and Isaiah Madrid; sister-in-law, Sadie Serrano and numerous loving nieces and nephews.

Services will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2019, at Immaculate Conception Church, 619 Copper Ave. NW, Albuquerque, NM 87102. A Rosary will be held at 9:00 a.m. followed by the Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. A Memorial Reception will be held at Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, 2401 12th St. NW, Albuquerque, NM 87104 beginning at 11:30 a.m. Flowers may be sent to FRENCH - University, 1111 University Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87102.
