Floyd Richard "Dick" Owens

Floyd Richard "Dick" Owens, 92, beloved husband and father, went to be in Heaven with the Lord, passing away peacefully on June 26, 2016. Dick was born in Pasadena, California on November 25, 1923. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Mary "Sue" Francis Owens; son, Thomas Leon Owens; grandson, Dean Edward Owens; and sisters, Ailene and Evelyn. Raised by his mother, Edna Owens, Dick's father, Millard, passed away when he was a toddler. He attended Andrew Jackson Elementary School and at 12 got a job at a hardware and feed store. After graduating from John Muir High School in 1941 he studied drafting and became an apprentice before enlisting in the US Navy in January 1943. He was assigned as a torpedoman's mate at the Naval ammunition depot in Hawthorne, Nevada when a case of Scarlet Fever prevented shipboard duty. The Naval Depot was where he met his wife to be, Sue. After WWII Dick spent several years as a draftsman in Baldwin Park, California before returning to Hawthorne working in planning and production at the world's largest ammunition depot. When Dick's career advanced, he and Sue moved to Alamogordo, New Mexico in 1962 where he worked at Holloman AFB, then Los Angeles AFS, Vandenberg AFB, finally moving in 1974 to Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque working in the Contract Management Division (CMD) manpower management office. He remained in Albuquerque after retiring in 1977. While in Alamogordo and Albuquerque, Dick sang bass in the Adult Chancel Choirs at Grace United Methodist and St. John's United Methodist Churches. He was always an avid outdoorsman, hunting and fishing throughout California, Nevada and New Mexico, harvesting a bull elk that remains on display at the NM Game and Fish Office in Albuquerque. After retirement Dick continued his lifelong interests in the outdoors, woodworking and cabinetmaking. In addition to his outgoing personality and congenial disposition, he was known for his prizewinning flower and vegetable gardens, hot homemade dill pickles, and difficult to grow but beautiful tuberous Begonias. Dick is survived by his daughter, Patti Cavin and husband, Bill of Albuquerque; son, Richard "Rick" Owens and wife, Amy of Rio Rancho; and daughter-in-law, Ruth Erwin in Nevada. Surviving grandchildren are Kimberli Ruiz and husband, Albert, Jeffrey Owens and wife, Cindy, Thomas Scott Owens and wife, Kari, Russell Owens and wife, Kelly, Timothy Owens and wife, Barb, Daniel Cavin, Cristina "Tina" Cavin Johnson and husband, Joshua, Ashley Owens, Brianna Owens and Tasha Owens. Also surviving are 17 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren. The family wishes to convey special thanks to Hospice De La Luz and Buena Vista Senior Care of Albuquerque. Both were wonderful. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, July 2, 2016, 9:30 a.m. at St. John's United Methodist Church, 2626 Arizona Street NE, Albuquerque, NM with Rev. John Schwarting officiating. Interment will follow the service at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
