Fayma Hawkins

August 22, 1918 — July 15, 2016

Fayma McDonald Hawkins, born August 22, 1918 in Mountain View, Oklahoma, went to be with her Lord Jesus Christ Friday, July 15, 2016. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Wilkes (Dave); grandsons, Jay Jones (Zanna) and Adam Jones; granddaughter, Alena Cowell, and four great-grandchildren, Autumn, Abigail, Zane and Pecos. She is survived by Pat Bodkins, Kate Lemmons (Danny), and nieces and nephews, Bonnie, Brenda, Bobby, Judi, Jerry and John. Fay was preceded in death by her husband, John; sisters, Laverne and Velda and brother, Glenn. Fay left Oklahoma at the age of 18 to attend UCLA.
She spent summers waitressing in Yellowstone and earned the money to pay her tuition. Fay and her husband, John, moved to Albuquerque in 1945. She did not earn a degree from UCLA, but soon returned to school at College of St. Joseph, where she obtained a degree in education. Fay taught first grade at Chaparral Elementary until her retirement. Her passions were family (making sure everyone was fed - even if you were not hungry), teaching (she had endless patience with children) and animals (she was frequently covered in cats while sleeping.)
A Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at Riverside Church of Christ, 3100 La Orillia Rd. Albuquerque, NM. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE Albuquerque, NM. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Albuquerque Christian Children's Home, www.acch4kids.org, or To Animal Humane Association, www.animalhumanenm.org.
