Evelyn Lujan Baca Maguire was born February 24, 1934 in Las Vegas NM, to Carlos Barromeo Lujan and Ignacia Paula Duran at her maternal grandmothers house. She died December 24, 2021 in Albuquerque, NM.
Evelyn went to school in Las Vegas at Our Lady of Sorrows and Immaculate Conception, graduated from Roy High School. She got a bachelor's degree at NM Highlands University in Las Vegas and master's at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. Evelyn taught at Zuni High School, Santa Rosa High School, Thoreau Elementary and various schools in Albuquerque, NM. She also taught at Mt. Edgecumbe High School, Alaska and Rein-Main Elementary, Rein-Main AFB, Germany. Her other teaching jobs included being a Teacher Corps Team Leader in Rocky Ford, CO, and a Head Start Trainer working out of Arizona State University in Phoenix. Evelyn married Ben Baca at St. Bernadette's Catholic Church December 9, 1992. Ben passed on October 12, 1993.
Survivors include sister, Peggy and Tony Blasi; sister-in-law, Willie Mae Lujan; sons, Fidel and Pat Baca of Suffolk, VA, James and Maria Baca of Placitas, NM, Rick and Marlene Baca of Albuquerque, NM, Bill and Teri Baca of Placitas, NM, and Joe Baca of Denver, CO. Evelyn then married William E. Maguire at St. Bernadette's Catholic Church February 6, 2010. The Maguire Family survivors are Brian and Karen Maguire of Hewitt, TX, Kevin Maguire and Kerry Maguire both of Albuquerque, NM, Kent and Lisa Maguire of Omaha, NE. Evelyn was proud of all of her wonderful grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She encountered the Lord as a child and became a committed Catholic, going to morning mass and communion frequently. Because of her commitment she was a Eucharistic Minister, Lector and joined the choir. She researched her family tree and she was a descendant from at least one family who came in the first entrada into NM in 1598. As a result of her interest in her antepasados she became a published author.
Services will begin with a Rosary being recited on Saturday, January 22, 2022, 10:00 a.m. at The Shrine of St. Bernadette's Catholic Church, 11401 Indian School Road NE. The Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. at the same location. Reception will be at the parish hall immediately following the mass. A private Committal will take place on Monday, January 24, 2021 at Gate of Heaven Mausoleum.
