Ernest David Niper, 89, a resident of Albuquerque since 1954, passed away Sunday, July 24, 2022. He was born Tuesday, September 20, 1932, in Warwick, NY. Mr. Niper graduated Warwick High School and received electronics training from DeVry Technical Institute. He worked as a mechanical rubber parts designer before entering the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict. In the Army he attended Radar school at Ft. Monmouth, NJ and the Nuclear School in Albuquerque. He was then assigned as an electronics instructor in the Nuclear School until his discharge. After completing military service, he was employed by Sandia National Laboratory for 38 years where he worked in several areas including weapons testing, scientific rocket systems design and testing, and safeguards systems for the DOE and later for the DOD. His many assignments required extensive travel to Europe, Africa, Australia, Hawaii, South Korea, and various Pacific Islands. During his employment with Sandia, he continued his education by attending the University of New Mexico where he majored in electrical engineering. He is survived by his wife, Lucy, of 70 years; daughters, Karan Mitchell and Kimberly Hallatt; grandchildren, Sherry, James, David, William, and Martin Mitchell; great-grandchildren, Everett, Garrett, Natalie, and Christopher Mitchell; and step great-grandchild, Bristol Guynes. Mr. Niper was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. & Mrs. William H. Niper; brother, William H. Niper Jr.; sister, Katherine M. Young; and nephews, Robert A. and Larry W. Young.
