Ernest M. Chavez, age 98, proud husband, father, grandfather, devoted Catholic and World War II Navy combat veteran went home to be with the Lord Saturday, March 30, 2024.
Ernest enlisted in the US Navy at the age of 18 and first served at Pearl Harbor, HI. He then was assigned to a destroyer escort ship in the Pacific and participated in combat operations. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 2 Bronze Stars.
After returning to Albuquerque, he met and married the love of his life, Ferminia aka Fannie. He began a 30-year career as a postman and raised a family. Ernest was a longtime member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church where he served as an usher during Sunday mass. Ernest also volunteered at St. Vincent de Paul Society providing food to families in need. His most fulfilling activity was assisting his wife with her volunteer duties at Holy Ghost Church. Ernest was routinely seen transporting equipment, supplies and church members to numerous events supporting the Altar Rosary Society.
Ernest's wife predeceased him, and he is survived by his son, Charles, aka Rik, (Lynn), and his grandson, David (Jaryn). Ernest and David had a special bond and David referred to him as Pompa.
We know he was welcomed into heaven by Jesus who said to him, "Well done, good and faithful servant".
The family would like to recognize the staff at Beehive Homes of Taylor Ranch for their loving and supportive care for the last 9 years of assisted living and especially for the tender loving care during his hospice phase.
