Elsie Rael Piper, 97, passed away on Tuesday, February 16, 2025 at her residence. She was born September 2, 1927 in Questa, New Mexico, she lived a full life surrounded by family and friends.
Elsie was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin E. Piper, Jr., her son, Frank H. P. Wells, her father, J. P. Rael, her mother, Esther G. Rael and siblings, Tessie Ortega, John Rael, and Maxine Martinez. She is survived by her daughters: Mary (Penny) Wells Shannen (Tom), Kathie Wells Chavez (Dennis), and Lauren Piper. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Michael King, Kristin Wells (whom she raised from an early age), Elisha Wells Robertson, Erica Chavez Webster, Amanda Chavez, Maddie Franco Bauer, Grant Bauer, Vanessa Shannen Anderson, and Ian Shannen. Additionally, she cherished her fourteen great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren, as well as her beloved nieces, nephews, and sister-in-law Duby Rael.
Elsie attended Harwood School for Girls in Albuquerque and El Rito Spanish American Normal School, and the University of New Mexico. She began her professional career at the Chamber of Commerce in Taos, and later worked for Senator Mechem in both Washington D.C. and Albuquerque.
An avid golfer, she achieved a remarkable hole-in-one in her eighties alongside her golf buddy, nephew, Mario Martinez. Her love for reading, music, painting, puzzles, and games, such as canasta and bridge kept her engaged with her circle of friends. She also enjoyed the daily crossword, crypto puzzles, and jumble. Elsie had a passion for betting on horse races and was known for her strategic skills in picking the winners, accompanied by her trusty companion, Maria Gutierrez, her caregiver for almost five years. She will be missed at the Downs.
Recently described as the the best of mankind, Elsie's generous spirit, kind nature, and quick wit touched the lives of many. She was fortunate to receive skilled care that kept her comfortable at home during her final days.
Elsie's memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. She will be dearly missed.
