Eloy J. Barela, 84, loving husband, dedicated father and friend to many, died peacefully on January 16, 2016. He is survived by his children, David Barela, (wife Marina), Bernadette Brown (husband Richard), Diane Zaiter, (husband Larry), Brian Barela, (wife Robin), ten grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his Sister Martha Driggers and brothers Aladino (wife Karen) and Gene Barela (wife Lydia) and dear friend, Juliet Saavedra. Eloy was preceded in death by his beloved wife Mary, his parents Silas and Mela and three siblings Ethel, Billy and Orlie. Eloy was employed by Sandia National Labs for 34 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus as well as a founding member and longtime parishioner of Our Lady of Assumption Parish. He had a passion for baseball, played semi-pro and volunteered numerous years coaching his sons. Eloy thoroughly enjoyed life. He was well traveled, loved playing golf and was very clever at assigning pet names for his family and close friends. He adored his grandchildren and traveled often to their home states to visit them.
Eloy, never one to be idle, was a part-time consultant for TMA. One could find him either tinkering in his workshop or working on his "projects". A Memorial Rosary will be held on Wednesday, January 20th at 7:00 p.m. at FRENCH - Lomas, and a Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, January 21st at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, 815 Guaymas Pl. NE with burial to follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery at 1900 Edith NE. Reception at Albuquerque Garden Center 10120 Lomas Blvd. NE.
