Elizabeth Winston Saunders, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away in her home on Friday, January 6, 2023. She was a beautiful person and will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
Beth was born in Waco, Texas to Paul Robert Winston and Bessie Buckley Winston on June 4,1916. She lived an exemplary 106 years, seeing two world wars, two worldwide pandemics, and some unbelievable technological advances in her lifetime.
She graduated from Texas Woman's University at Denton Texas in 1936 with a bachelor's degree in education. She had a passion for sports from a young age - baseball mostly. As a teacher in Albuquerque, she joyfully taught Girls Physical Education at John Adams Junior High School from 1958 until she retired in 1983. She was loved and respected by her students and her fellow teachers.
Beth was an avid bridge player and gardener. She loved sunflowers, strawberry ice cream, family reunions and Sunday lunches with her family at Monroe's Mexican restaurant in Albuquerque.
She is survived by her three children, Lawrence Winston Saunders, Judith Lynn Battles, and James Buckley Saunders, Sr. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Angie Lumley, Scot Saunders, James Saunders Jr., and Christopher Saunders; and by her great-grandchildren, Mary Lumley, Dan Lumley, Isabella Saunders, Sebastian Saunders, Zachery Saunders, and James Saunders III.
Her ashes will be interred with her beloved husband, JM Saunders (a valiant veteran of WWII), at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
