Eleanor Dasch Miller

Eleanor Dasch Miller, 97, passed away peacefully in her sleep February 17, 2016 at The Montebello in Albuquerque where she had resided for the last 13 years. She was born August 13, 1918 in Akron, Ohio to Ukrainian immigrants Ralph and Minnie Handler Dasch, the youngest of 5 children and the only one born in America. She graduated from University of Akron in 1939 and, like so many of her generation of independent young women, headed to New York City to see what life would offer.
She became a child dietician and did some graduate work at Columbia University, all the while playing gleefully in the garden of cultural delights that was New York City during the WWII era: world-class jazz and classical music; the original Broadway productions of shows by Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Kurt Weill and Rodgers & Hammerstein; the Metropolitan Opera. It was while working at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital that she met Dr. Leroy J. (Larry) Miller, a neurosurgeon in the midst of his neurological residency. They married in December, 1945 and lived in New York City where their first son Richard was born in 1948.
The following year in search of greener pastures, the family moved to Albuquerque where Larry became New Mexico's first and preeminent neurosurgeon. A second son, Fred, was born in 1951 after which the family moved to Denver where they lived at Fitzsimmons Army Base for two years. Returning to New Mexico permanently in 1955, the Millers would thrive professionally and socially, supporting the lively musical and graphic arts scene in both Albuquerque and Santa Fe.
In line with her love of art, Eleanor took special pleasure as a docent at The Albuquerque Museum. A superb cook, she would be the creative force at the heart of countless memorable parties at the family home over the years. In the late 1950's, the Millers bought a ranch in Durango, Colorado where they spent time and hosted many friends during the warm months. Larry's love of piloting led to the family traveling throughout the U.S. and Mexico in their own Beechcraft Bonanza.
Larry & Eleanor's shared passion for travel carried on after their boys were grown, taking them on dozens of adventures all over the world right up to the time of Larry's death in 1998. Eleanor continued traveling abroad on her own in the years after, stopping only as the limitations of age encroached.
She is survived by her two sons, Richard and Fred; a daughter-in-law Christine Traut Miller; two nephews, Stan and Joe Berman; 3 nieces, Nina Adler, Harriet Berman, Iris Kroll, their families and a host of devoted longtime friends.
The family requests no flowers be sent but rather that commemorative donations be made in Eleanor's name to The Albuquerque Museum, 2000 Mountain Rd NW, Albuquerque NM 87104.
A memorial open to the public is scheduled for Friday, April 29, 2:00 PM at The Montebello, 10500 Academy Rd. NE, Albuquerque NM 87111.
