Edythe Augusta (Scroggs) Lake

November 10, 1923 — August 27, 2017

Edythe Augusta Lake was born to Elma and Gus Scroggs on November 10, 1923 in Bogalusa, LA. Our dear mother was called home to be with Jesus on Sunday, August 27, 2017. Edythe had two siblings, Charles Scroggs and Betty Woods, who preceded her in death.

Edythe married Gerald Hunton Lake on November 11, 1945 in New Orleans, LA. She was married nearly 60 years when our father passed away on June 26, 2004. Edythe is survived by her daughters, Cheryl Wallerstedt and husband, David of Albuquerque, and Karen Henderson and husband, Butch of Plainview, TX; two sisters-in-law, Mary Catherine Boucher and Eleanor Love; and many nieces and nephews. She has seven grandchildren, Gerald Gene (who preceded her in death), Dawn and husband, Alan, Ryan and wife, Rebecca, Rex and wife, Melissa, Jodi and husband, John, Janna and husband, Chase, and Rick and wife, Brogan; and ten great-grandchildren. She so treasured each and every one.

Edythe was working for the telephone company in New Orleans when she met the love of her life at St. Ephesians Field Baptist Church in New Orleans. Within a year or so after the birth of their first born, Cheryl, her husband moved back to his beloved state of New Mexico where he worked as an architect. Our beautiful mom never forgot her southern heritage, charm, and cooking. She was a very gracious hostess and cook. Edythe was actively involved in her church home of First Baptist. Edythe was known for her love of God and being a strong Godly woman who believed in prayer. Edythe had a great love for missions. She and her younger daughter Karen went to mission week at Glorieta every year. She prayed for and gave to missions. She was also a WMU president and very active in WMU. She was a GA teacher and Sunday School teacher and very involved in the children’s program at her church. She volunteered for hospitals as an auxiliary guild volunteer for many years. She also volunteered to work in the voting polls.

Edythe was known for her contagious smile and Spirit-filled life. She was a wonderful, loving mother and grandmother. She has been surrounded by a large family who loves her dearly and will miss her.

Edythe’s family is extremely grateful to the caring staff at Mountain View Residential Home and to the compassionate staff of Amber Hospice Care.
