Edwin Thompson "Tom" Oakes, 84, adored brother, husband, father, and grandfather, was called to his eternal resting place on May 7, 2017. He entered this world on February 19, 1933 in Ann Arbor, MI, born to Edwin Charles and Helen Thompson Oakes.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marjorie Oakes; his adoring children and their spouses, Doug Oakes and his wife, Deborah, of Bailey, CO, Carol Torrez and her husband, Edmund, Ron Oakes and his wife, Tara, and Susan Caskey and her husband, Alan Osterholtz, all of Albuquerque, NM; along with his 6 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and his proud sister, Ruth Butwell, of Berea, KY.
Tom had an adventurous career for over 40 years, at Sandia National Laboratories, and continued to enjoy travels and adventures with his wife, Marge, after retirement. He was active in many outdoor activities and served as a volunteer with various organizations. Tom was an active Boy Scout leader for the Westside for troop 174 even after his two sons had long become Eagle Scouts. Tom also supported the American Vaulting Association as a volunteer for more than 20 years. He was an Elder with First Presbyterian Church, and over the years supported many of the church’s technical needs.
