Ed Hughes, age 77, passed gently from earth to heaven on October 13, 2018, following a sixteen-day hospitalization for pneumonia. For 52 years he was a loving husband to his wife, Dr. Helen Blysard Hughes. Together they had one daughter, Kristy, of Seattle, WA. Ed had been an Albuquerque resident since 2002.
Ed was born on December 4, 1940, in Lufkin, TX. His parents were James and Flora Hughes. Ed was a graduate of Lufkin High School. He held a BS from Sam Houston State University and a master’s degree in Biology from the University of Houston. He relished a 29-year career with IBM where he was respected for his organizational, analytical and teaching skills. He was a significant contributor to the simulation programs used to run NASA’s lunar landers.
Ed was gentle, generous and kind. He loved to travel. He was well-read and enjoyed music and movies. He had a beautiful voice and reveled in singing harmony. He was a talented photographer. He was a thoughtful student of the Bible, and a devoted member of West Mesa Christian Church where he was a member of the church council.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother Michael. He is survived by his best friend and partner in all things, Helen; his daughter, Kristy and her partner, Jess.
The memorial service celebrating Ed's life and his faith will take place this Sunday, Oct 28, at 11:30 am, at West Mesa Christian Church (8821 Golf Course Rd NW, Albuquerque, NM, 87120). A reception will follow. Childcare will be available. In lieu of flowers, Helen suggests that contributions be made in his memory to West Mesa Christian Church.
