DAVIS, EARLE ANDREW JR., Ph.D.
Age 93, a resident of Albuquerque, NM, formerly of Laguna Hills, CA, died in Albuquerque on Monday, August 27, 2012. Dr. Davis was born in Woodlawn, PA on June 1, 1919 to Earle and Besse Davis. His parents and a brother, Robert J. Davis, predeceased him. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, the former Margaret Hahn, whom he met at Grove City College in Pennsylvania. Other survivors include his sister-in-law, Ruth Shultz Hahn; nephews, Walter William Hahn, Peter Philip Hahn, William E. Hahn Jr., Philip E. Hahn; and nieces, Jane Hahn Reed and Margery Ann Rigsby. Before serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, Dr. Davis earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Grove City College in 1941 and a Master of Science degree at the University of Pittsburgh in 1943. Following the war, he completed his education at the University of Illinois, where he received his Ph.D. in Physiology and Zoology in 1953. Dr. Davis had a long and distinguished teaching career at the university level. He taught at several colleges in the Midwest before joining the faculty at the University of California-Irvine, where he taught a variety of courses to medical students and residents from 1969-2001. He received multiple teaching awards at UC-Irvine. He also lectured at many hospitals and medical schools in the United States and 13 other countries, including the United Kingdom, Sweden, Denmark and Egypt. In addition to teaching, Dr. Davis was active in professional activities and held many leadership positions. He served as President of the UC-Irvine chapter of the American Association of University Professors and as a Trustee of the Medical Research Association of California. He was a member of the American Association of the Advancement of Science, the Society of Neuroscience, and the Pan American Congress of Anatomists, and a Fellow of the International Surgeons. Dr. Davis was a member of the Editorial Boards of several respected medical journals and authored many professional journal articles. He served as a consultant to many corporate and medical clients and as an expert witness in the California court system. There will be no visitation or services. Dr. Davis will be laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills, California.
