Dwayne Edward Lucero, 37, beloved husband, father, brother, son and uncle, went home to the Lord on Thursday, August 25, 2022. He entered this world on Thursday, February 7, 1985, in Las Cruces, New Mexico. He is survived by his daughter, Alina Lucero; stepchildren, Alyssa, Lorena, and Aj Ramirez; spouse, Stephanie Lucero; father, Edward Fernando Lucero; mother, Evelina Zuni Lucero; siblings, Rafaela Kovacs (David); Derek Lucero (Rita); Tessa Lucero (Karlo); and numerous nieces and nephews.
He grew up at Isleta Pueblo, where he was a tribal member and graduated from Rio Grande High School in 2003.
Dwayne served with the US Army from June 2003 until July 2010, as both a Cavalry Scout (primary MOS) and Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic (secondary MOS). During his time as a soldier, Dwayne achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant. He served three combat tours in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom (2004, 2006-2007, 2009-2010), and earned numerous awards and recognitions, to include the Army Commendation Medal with 2 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Army Achievement Medal with 3 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters.
Soon after he left the military, he attended the University of New Mexico and graduated in 2014 with a Bachelor of Science degree in medical science. He began working at the Veterans Hospital in the laboratory doing bloodwork. Encouraged by his co-workers, he returned to school to study nursing. In 2018, he achieved his goal and received a BSN degree in nursing from UNM.
As a new registered nurse, Dwayne enjoyed serving the Isleta community during his employment at the Isleta Health Center; he was described as compassionate and respectful by community members. He went on to work at various healthcare facilities.
Dwayne was best known by those close to him for his sense of humor, his love of children, and strong character. He was outgoing and friendly, kind and caring. He enjoyed listening to music and engaging in physical fitness. His favorite attire was basketball shorts and t-shirts. He will be greatly missed by those whose lives he touched with his love and playful wit.
A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, September 7, 2022, at 3:00 p.m. at FRENCH - Lomas, Albuquerque, NM. Interment will take place at Santa Fe National Cemetery at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, September 8, 2022.
