Dr. Michael C. Koss, Sr. died at home in Placitas, New Mexico on August 28, 2018.
Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1940, he earned his PhD in Pharmacology from Columbia University in 1971. During an academic career spanning more than 40 years at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and Dean McGee Eye Institute, Dr. Koss published over one hundred academic papers and taught thousands of medical, dental, and allied health students. In recognition of excellence in teaching, research, and leadership, Dr. Koss was appointed David Ross Boyd Professor in 2000. He was particularly proud to have been selected by medical students to receive multiple Aesculapian Awards. Dr. Koss remained intellectually curious in retirement and continued to travel between New Mexico and Oklahoma to teach even as he battled cancer. He and his wife made a formidable team at contract Bridge tournaments.
Michael Koss, Sr. will be deeply missed by his colleagues, friends, and family, including his spouse, Maris Mason, children Michael Koss, Jr., Andrea Kotowski, Nicole Jensen, and Catheryn Koss, and grandchildren Christopher Koss, Travis Bohl, and Clayton Bohl.
To honor his life, the family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
