Douglas (Doug) James Stiebler PhD, MS, RD, B.A. (Psychology), B.S. (Business) died unexpectedly on Thursday, July 27, 2023, just a few weeks short of his 80th birthday. Doug was born to Alfred and Ardath Stiebler, in Chicago, Illinois who both passed away in 2013. He is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Carole, and dear brother, Tom in the Chicago area. After university in Colorado, Doug came to New Mexico in the 1970s to ski and never left.
In high school Doug competed in speedskating around Chicago and in Wisconsin. He loved anything on two wheels and raced motorcycles in his twenties. He was an avid bicyclist and a fierce competitor winning many road races. After a career in real estate appraising, Doug changed his focus to nutrition and exercise. His intelligent and inquisitive mind led him to complete his PhD in nutrition and exercise physiology at UNM. He was a certified, licensed Registered Dietitian and taught nutrition at CNM for several trimesters.
Doug was very interested in making the world a better place, whether by serving on a city-wide advisory committee to improve biking safety and accessibility, serving on a statewide professional board, or sharing scientific information with students, colleagues, and policy makers.
His hobby was building and riding bicycles and enjoyed racing them in New Mexico. He rode his bicycle at least 25 miles daily up to the last day and often joked that he hoped he would be riding when he was 90 years old. He loved New Mexico and his favorite meal was a bean burrito with red chili. Doug was an avid believer in eating organic food, including chocolate ice cream, and boasted about his homemade pancakes. Doug cared about his family and wonderful friends while enjoying a quiet life in retirement doing what he loved. Per Doug's wishes, he will be cremated, but no services held.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to the Roadrunner Food Bank of New Mexico in Doug's name. Their donation portal can be found at the following web address:
