Dorothy Meade Treadwell passed away suddenly on April 9, 2024. She was 81.
Dorothy grew up in Alki in West Seattle, Washington. She was the only child of Margrede and Lawrence Meade, and deeply cherished both sides of her wily Irish and proper Scandinavian extended family.
Although she left Seattle after college, she maintained a lifelong love of her Alki roots and the friends that she made growing up, including her best friend, Barbara Nelson Greer.
She attended West Seattle High School and graduated in 1960, before receiving a Bachelor's Degree in English from The University of Washington in 1964. She went back to school in her later years and earned a Master's Degree in Accounting from the University of New Mexico in 1984.
Dorothy's professional life was a great point of pride for her. After earning her CPA, she spent many years working as an accountant for multiple organizations, including the YWCA in Columbus, Ohio. After returning to New Mexico later in life she became the Budget Analyst for the Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute in Albuquerque, NM. She absolutely loved her work.
She was a devoted Episcopalian and attended services at St. Thomas of Canterbury, where she served on the Vestry. She was a tireless supporter of women's causes, led by example, gave to many charities, and was an active member of the Petal Pushers, a local gardening club.
Dorothy was known for her great sense of humor, her intelligence, her grace, her indomitable willpower, mighty independence, and her genuine care and concern for friends and family.
Her favorite things included crossword puzzles, terrible puns, coffee, gardening, polka dots, jellybeans, reading, sharing photos of her grandkids, talking to her daughter at 4pm every Sunday, and checking the obituaries every day to see if she was featured. (Look Mom! You made it!)
She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, grandparents, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Treadwell, of San Diego, California, and her son David Treadwell, his wife Amalia, and their two children Levi and Hannah, of Portland, Oregon.
Dorothy Treadwell led a deceptively simple life yet was extraordinary to those that knew her. She will be missed by many.
In lieu of flowers please consider honoring Dorothy with a donation to Meals on Wheels of New Mexico, or St. Thomas of Canterbury Church.Visits: 175
